On the afternoon of December 3, 2021, the Luong Van Can Fund organized the “Methods to Study Effectively at Universities 2022” training program. The training session was held at the building of the HCMC Union of Science and Technology Associations and featured speaker Hoang Minh Thong, a Master of Education in Leadership and Policy from the University of Bristol, UK.

The training session was structured around discussions and open sharing of the following topics:

• The reasons why one wants to go to university
• The philosophy of higher education
• Students’ common mistakes in study management
• How to make an effective study plan suitable for each individual

At the beginning of the program, Mr. Hoang Minh Thong started a discussion with the students and asked, “Why did you choose to enter university?” The students had the opportunity to share their previous goals and when they decided to study in a big city. Mr. Hoang listened to each group and encapsulated the issues that all five groups mentioned. He then introduced to the students the purpose of university education and the benefits that students would gain when choosing to study at university, including:

• Learning to communicate well
• Learning to reflect
• Building one’s own character
• Equipping oneself to become a good citizen
• Living in diversity
• Directing oneself towards global society
• Gaining broader benefits
• Equipping oneself for future career

For specific purposes, students need to set goals for what they want to achieve. Students need a feasible, effective, and comprehensive learning method to achieve those goals. According to Mr. Hoang Minh Thong, self-directed learning is a spirit that students should equip themselves with to be able to adapt to any changes in society. To develop that spirit, students need to have a suitable set of study skills for themselves, including active learning methods as well as more communication with lecturers and classmates to consolidate their knowledge.

With the spirit of self-directed learning, Mr. Hoang Minh Thong offered some commonly used learning methods and supporting tools to help students achieve the best study results, including how to take notes effectively, memorize lessons deeply, and make detailed study plans.

Mr. Hoang Minh Thong’s sharing in the training session allowed the participants to have more materials to develop an appropriate university-level study approach for themselves. The scientific and relatively simple methods can be used instantly in a student’s life but demand each individual to have a high commitment when executing them. The Luong Van Can Fund sincerely appreciates Mr. Hoang Minh Thong for always accompanying the Fund in helping students prepare for their future career. Through this training session, the LVCF hoped that students would find an effective and suitable studying method in the university environment.
